This week at Oxford

This week we had a number of positive things happen here at OCS.

Mr. O'Brien, the Principal of Warren Hills High School spoke to our 8th grade about the HS and what they might have in store for them as they complete their 8th grade and get ready to move to the HS. Mr. O'Brien and I spoke about the school and our students as they move through the HS and he told me that our Oxford students are consistently at the top of their classes and are always key contributors in the classrooms, on the playing fields and as participants in the many clubs and activities offered at Warren Hills. In order to make sure that we continue this we have our teachers attending articulation meetings with the HS personnel in Science and in Math, and soon in Language Arts as well.

Assemblyman Michael Doherty was here on Thursday to speak with our 6th grade Social Studies classes and field questions concerning government in NJ. We spoke as he left at the end of the day and he was very impressed with the preparation, the questions and the politeness of our students! He is also a huge Mets and Giants fan! Look for some pictures on our website soon.

We will be scheduling our 8th grade students for classes at Warren Hills next month. We are also going to set up a liaison here at OCS to keep our kids informed about athletics that are offered at Warren Hills Middle School. Our representative would be in contact with the athletic department at WH so that we can keep our student-athletes informed!

Don't forget the BOE meeting next Thursday, February 26th at 6:00 pm in the school library.

President's Day weekend

Yes! A three day weekend! Sorry it could have been a four day weekend, but the weather did not cooperate. Looks like we are dodging some snow showers for Saturday and the sun will come out! Our sixth grade homerooms went down to Trenton on Tuesday to get a tour of the State House and learn more about the government in New jersey. They met State Senator Marcia Karrow and had a great time. Special thanks to Mrs. Lurz who got a grant from the Eagleton Institute. The grant enabled us to pay for the trip. The sixth grade will also be hosting Assemblyman Doherty this Wednesday at 2:00. We look forward to his visit.
Happy Valentine's Day!

Well it has finally happened...

Something has hit the market place, targeted towards kids, that surprises the experts! It appears that the Camel cigarette company is testing a new form of smokeless tobacco in Indiana that contains upwards of 8 milligrams of nicotine IN EACH POUCH!! Depending on the brand, that is 300 percent more than most cigarettes!

Most articles I have read online all seem to point in one direction---our kids! The promotions, the advertisements, the entire package surrounding this product seems to be aimed at our youth. The product, Camel Snus, is referred to as "orbs", "strips", or "sticks." It is dissolvable, meaning the "chewer" does not have to spit. I can not imagine what this product can do to your stomach, esophagus and other internal organs. Let alone the blood pressure issues, vomiting, possible seizures and brain damage!!

They are on the horizon. Please keep an eye out for them locally. It looks like once a young teen starts using them, it may be too late to get them off the product.

Man! This is a stupid Idea!

Math-A-Thon

This week you should be getting information concerning the Math-A-Thon program that we have been running here at OCS. Over the past nine years we have raised over $28,000 from our community that has directly gone to the St.Jude's Hospital and their research efforts to help kids. Thank you. This year, our TENTH year anniversary, we are hoping to push our ten year total over $30,000! We are sending home information this week and we are expanding the program to all grades. Our upper grades can use the math materials to assist them in reviewing some of the things that have been done in class the past two marking periods. Special thanks to Mrs. Dowd and Ms. Mazzeo for spearheading the program this year.

Report cards have gone home. If you have questions or concerns, please give your teacher a call.

Well I did see my shadow...

and as we all know that means we will have at least five more months of school!

But don't worry, according to weatherman Ed Hanna, the warm temperatures are on their way.

Just a reminder that there will be a 7th and 8th grade parents meeting this Thursday night at 6:30 to discuss the Pasta Dinner. We will be giving out more information on the 8th grade trip immediately following the meeting.
