January Musings

Sitting here at my desk this morning and it is 20 degrees, but the temperature is going up to the mid-40's and by the weekend the 50's!  Another typically weird winter in NJ!

I wanted to focus today on the security measures that we have been improving upon and to discuss our current program. As you know we have had cameras outside the building monitoring the school grounds for the past six years, built a new doorway to restrict access to the school and we keep our doors locked at all times.  The classrooms have individual emergency plans that we practice monthly and after the tragic event in Newtown, Connecticut before Christmas we have met with law enforcement officials four times to have them re-evaluate our program, make any suggestions and from these discussions we have added -- or will add -- other security measures as soon as possible.  I was hoping that state statutes would be modified to allow us to move forward with improvements without having to slog through the bureaucratic red-tape or hoops to jump through!  But in the absence of fast tracking improvements, we are following the legal procedures as part of our process to improve the security program we offer to protect everyone here at OCS.

We recently added a new camera and door locking system for our front entrance that allows us to restrict building access even if the Main Office is not occupied!  In the future our school security cameras will allow for local law enforcement to get a visual and to get alerts to their police cars and to adminstration cell phones if we had a problem.  The building is monitored 24 hours a day and that system will only be getting better over time.

We take this issue very seriously here at OCS and we continue to look for additional layers of security to protect all our staff and students each day.

Till next time...
